CHILE: Piñera's weak hand on protests

Public protests have made President Sebastián Piñera's first year in office busy, if not challenging. By and large they remain localised, triggered by rows over land rights, labour rights and, most recently, gas prices. The other trigger for the protests is often the government's weak communication with the public and its recurrent mishandling of the protestors. This awkwardness contrasts starkly with Pinera's personal, hands-on approach to the heavily publicised miners' rescue in October 2010.
